Five people were killed after an Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767 operated by 21 Air overran a runway at Miami International Airport, crossed a roadway, struck multiple vehicles and caught fire. Federal investigators are now examining the aircraft's speed, braking, mechanical condition, weather and the circumstances of its unusually late touchdown.

But the crash has also put a little-known runway safety system under the spotlight. Miami International was not equipped with an Engineered Materials Arresting System, or EMAS — crushable material designed to slow aircraft that overrun a runway.
