Donald Trump’s decision to scale back military exercises with South Korea has triggered concern in the Philippines that China could exploit a perceived gap in America’s regional presence. Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro warned that Beijing is “very quick to exploit gaps,” arguing that developments on the Korean Peninsula could affect strategic calculations around Taiwan and the South China Sea. China rejected that premise. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Beijing does not pursue confrontation between military blocs and called on regional countries to support peace. China instead argues that US alliances, military exercises and long-range missile deployments are intensifying Asia-Pacific tensions.
