In 1940, the British Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under foreign license. Chief designer Edgar Schmued argued that his team could create a superior airframe from scratch. Within 117 days, the prototype NA-73X rolled out, featuring a radical laminar flow wing profile that drastically cut drag. Powered by the liquid-cooled Allison V-1710 inline engine, the early Mustang outperformed contemporaries down low. Transferred to the Royal Air Force, it proved formidable in tactical reconnaissance across France, though its single-stage supercharger limited high-altitude performance.
The Eighth Air Force soon faced a crisis over Germany. Daylight strategic bombing raids by B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators against industrial targets in Schweinfurt and Regensburg suffered severe attrition. Radial-engine escort fighters like the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt had heavy firepower but burned fuel rapidly, forcing them to turn back at the German frontier. Left unprotected, American bombers faced swarms of Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 interceptors.
The operational balance shifted when British test pilot Ronald Harker advocated mating the airframe with the two-stage supercharged Rolls-Royce Merlin 61. Packard produced the engine under license as the V-1650. The resulting P-51B and P-51C possessed exceptional high-altitude power. Fitted with drop tanks and an 85-gallon fuselage fuel cell behind the cockpit, the Mustang achieved the endurance to fly all the way to Berlin and back.
Under General Jimmy Doolittle, fighters moved from close escort to aggressive sweeps, dismantling the Luftwaffe before D-Day. The definitive P-51D introduced a teardrop bubble canopy and six machine guns. Flown by units like the Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group, the Mustang secured air dominance. Refined into the lightweight P-51H and the twin-fuselage F-82, the airframe re-entered combat in Korea as the F-51, executing low-level ground strikes under heavy fire before swept-wing jet fighters claimed the front lines.
