Brahmaputra Dam Row | China’s Mega Project Raises Concerns For India, Bangladesh

China’s massive hydropower ambitions in Tibet are putting the Brahmaputra River and downstream water security under renewed scrutiny. The Himalayan region is facing rapid infrastructure development at the same time as glaciers retreat, glacial lakes expand and extreme weather events become a growing concern.

At the centre of the debate is China’s Medog hydropower project on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in southeastern Tibet. The river eventually enters India as the Brahmaputra before flowing into Bangladesh.

The project is expected to become one of the world’s largest hydropower developments, but its location in a seismically active and geologically complex Himalayan region has raised questions about safety and downstream impacts.

Analysts have also raised concerns about how changes in river flows could affect communities in India and Bangladesh, particularly during the monsoon season. The wider Himalayan infrastructure boom—including dams, roads, tunnels and bridges—is adding another layer to an already climate-vulnerable region.
