Former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son Namal Rajapaksa has been arrested over alleged graft linked to a controversial 2013 Airbus deal involving SriLankan Airlines.
Rajapaksa was questioned for more than five hours by Sri Lanka’s anti-corruption authorities before being produced before a Colombo magistrate. The court rejected his bail request and ordered him remanded until September 18.
Investigators allege that Rajapaksa received around $800,000 in connection with the aircraft deal, with court submissions reportedly alleging that the money was routed through two Singapore bank accounts. Rajapaksa has denied any wrongdoing.
The case relates to an aircraft procurement deal approved during his father Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency. Airbus was later investigated over alleged bribery connected to aircraft sales in Sri Lanka and reached a major settlement with authorities in the United States, Britain and France in 2020.
The Rajapaksa family has denied receiving bribes and supporters have described the latest arrest as a politically motivated “witch hunt.”
