NEPAL FLOOD CRISIS: The death toll from the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal has risen to 1,344, while more than 5,000 people remain unaccounted for as massive search and rescue operations continue across flood-hit areas.
Rescue teams are continuing operations at damaged hydropower projects and tunnels, where workers are feared trapped. In a dramatic rescue mission, survivors were pulled out after spending days trapped inside a flood-affected tunnel. Another Chinese national was also rescued after reportedly being trapped for 11 days following the devastating floods and landslides that struck Nepal on August 26.
At the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower project, rescuers have recovered another body while continuing the search for missing workers. Two survivors were previously rescued alive after spending nine days inside the tunnel.
India has significantly expanded its support for Nepal’s relief and rescue efforts. 54 Indian personnel have been deployed, including tunnel rescue specialists, forensic experts and medical personnel. India has also supplied around 95 tonnes of relief material through seven aircraft.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, 169 Indian nationals have been rescued, while 275 remain missing. Drones are also being used to deliver essential equipment, food and sanitary supplies to remote communities cut off by floods and landslides.
International assistance is also reaching Nepal, with an Australian disaster assistance response team arriving in Kathmandu to support search and rescue operations.
The disaster is also creating downstream concerns in Bihar, where rivers flowing from Nepal, including the Gandak and Kosi, eventually feed into the Ganga. The Ganga has risen above the danger mark at several locations, prompting authorities to intensify embankment monitoring, relief and rescue operations.
