US-SAUDI ARMS DEAL: The United States has approved a potential $5 billion sale of bombs and precision guidance kits to Saudi Arabia, as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East.

The proposed package includes more than 10,000 general-purpose bombs, split between 500-pound and 2,000-pound munitions, along with more than 10,000 Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended Range guidance kits that can turn standard bombs into precision-guided weapons.

The broader regional arms clearance is valued at around $6.1 billion and also includes proposed defense-related sales to Oman and Iraq.

According to the US State Department, the Saudi package is intended to strengthen the kingdom’s homeland defense and improve operational interoperability between US forces and Gulf partners. Saudi Arabia has faced missile and drone threats amid the wider regional conflict involving Iran and Yemen’s Houthi movement.
