Bangladesh police have taken six Chinese nationals into custody in Cox’s Bazar over suspected involvement in an online fraud and cybercrime operation.
Authorities say nearly 2,000 iPhones and dozens of laptops were seized during a raid at Hotel C Palace in Cox’s Bazar. Police reportedly recovered 1,938 iPhones along with around 30 to 40 laptops and other communication equipment.
Officials said some of the seized devices appeared similar to equipment used by foreign law enforcement agencies. The six detainees are facing a case over alleged involvement in online fraud and other cybercrimes.
Police said the hotel raid was launched after receiving intelligence inputs from Dhaka. Authorities also said between 200 and 300 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals were believed to be staying across two hotels in the area.
The identities of the suspected individuals have not yet been confirmed, while police suspect that more foreign nationals could be involved in similar activities in Cox’s Bazar. Efforts to identify and detain other suspected individuals are reportedly underway.
Hotel staff said a group of Chinese nationals arrived and checked in on August 26, with several members of the group taken into custody during Thursday night’s raid.
