Two Simple Rules for Starting a Fall Garden

It’s time to start our fall vegetable garden! But that doesn’t mean we’re starting every fall vegetable in seed trays.

In this video, we’re starting our broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, and collards in trays, and I’ll walk you through our entire seed-starting process—from filling the trays and planting the seeds to covering, watering, and fertilizing the seedlings.

We’ll also talk about why we prefer to transplant these crops instead of direct seeding them. Starting transplants gives us better control over germination, lets us put a strong plant in every spot in the garden, and allows us to get the fall garden growing while our summer garden is still finishing up.

But some fall vegetables are much better suited for direct seeding. We typically direct seed carrots, turnips, beets, rutabagas, spinach, and radishes right into the garden.

I’ll share the two simple rules I use to decide:

🌱 Root vegetable or something planted thick? Direct seed it.
🌱 Larger plant that needs plenty of individual space? Transplant it.

There are always exceptions, but those two rules make planning a fall garden much easier.
