Canada sheds 42,000 jobs in August amid trade war

The Canadian economy lost approximately 42,000 jobs in August, with the public sector absorbing roughly half of those losses. CTV's Stefan Keyes reports that while the national unemployment rate held steady at 6.4 per cent, Ottawa's local jobless rate jumped to 7.4 per cent. BMO senior economist Sal Guatieri warns that upcoming retaliatory tariffs will likely put a further chill on business confidence and hiring. The manufacturing industry provided a rare bright spot, unexpectedly gaining 22,000 jobs before the new trade tensions take full effect.
