Then there is the letter. Written from Cairo in January 1799, addressed to Sultan Tipu of Mysore. It never arrived. The British intercepted it - and instead of destroying it, they used it. Four months later, Seringapatam fell.
And this: almost every famous image you have ever seen of Napoleon was commissioned by Napoleon himself. We look at what was altered in the coronation painting, who was painted into a ceremony she had boycotted, and what the Egyptian scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Jabarti wrote down while watching French cavalry ride into Al-Azhar.
The family he built lasted four years. The empire lasted eleven. What outlived him was not a crown - it was a book of law.
