7-Days Alone Through Iceland: Volcanic Highlands to the Arctic Ocean
🌋 🇮🇸 🧊
Seven days, completely alone, in one of the most remote corners of Iceland — and I'd never paddled a packraft before this trip. This is a solo crossing through Iceland's volcanic highlands: days of trekking on foot followed by a descent by packraft all the way to the Arctic Ocean, learning how to handle the raft as I went, with no support crew and no safety net.
The route started with a multi-day trek across the highlands, where I stopped to fish for brown trout in Íshólsvatn, a remote highland lake, before putting the raft in the water for the first time. From there came the real test: the Mjóadalsá, a raging whitewater river tearing through a lava rock canyon on its way to meet the Skjálfandafljót, followed by a long, whitewater-filled paddle down the Skjálfandafljót toward the coast near Húsavík — portaging around Goðafoss and Barnafoss along the way, and running the crux of the whole trip: the canyon just below Barnafoss. Even reaching the shoreline wasn't the finish — I still had to paddle across the open bay to close out the journey. Seven days, one raft, and a route that didn't let up until the very end.
