IAEA Chief Mariano Grossi Inspects Syrian Sites Linked To Nuclear Material During Damascus Visit

IAEA Director General Mariano Rafael Grossi visited Syria and inspected sites linked to nuclear material inherited from the former regime. During his visit to Damascus, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani said nuclear material discovered at an undisclosed site was not dangerous and would remain under Syrian custody subject to IAEA safeguards. Syria’s new authorities have pledged to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency to address the legacy of nuclear activities from the Assad era. Grossi said the agency was granted access to the site after being notified by the Syrian government.

The development comes amid renewed international attention on Syria’s nuclear history, including Israel’s 2007 bombing of a suspected nuclear reactor in Deir ez-Zor.
