Hegseth appeared to mock the appearance of one of the women, commenting "this is real" alongside a Canadian flag emoji. The image was posted by Cadets Vernon, part of Canada's youth cadet program for young people aged 12 to 18, rather than the regular Canadian Armed Forces. The controversy comes as relations between Washington and Ottawa remain strained following the collapse of trade negotiations and an escalating tariff dispute. Canada has announced counter-tariffs on hundreds of US products, including steel, aluminum, furniture, golf clubs, milk and apparel.
