US-Venezuela oil deal: What does it mean for Washington?

In January, the US military captured and detained Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. Since then, Donald Trump has said Washington would run Venezuela’s oil reserves. On Friday, Washington announced a deal to take majority control of much of the country’s oil reserves. The move puts Venezuela’s vast oil resources at the centre of US policy and raises questions over why the reserves matter to Washington.
