This week on WION Wings, we celebrate Onam through food, faith and tradition before travelling from Kerala’s backwaters to Portugal, Ecuador and Iceland. Onam is one of Kerala’s biggest celebrations, and at the heart of it is the Onam Sadhya, an elaborate vegetarian feast traditionally served on a banana leaf. We begin at the Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple in New Delhi, where devotees come together for Onam celebrations and a traditional Sadhya.
Hundreds of rowers, enormous traditional boats and cheering crowds turn Kerala’s waterways into a sporting arena. We experience the energy of the state’s famous snake boat races, where sporting rivalry, teamwork and centuries-old tradition come together on the backwaters.
In Portugal, one of the country’s most colourful festivals fills the streets with elaborate costumes, music, maritime traditions and giant parade figures. The Romaria da Senhora d’Agonia in Viana do Castelo combines faith and celebration in an event deeply connected to the region’s fishing community.
The skies above Ecuador’s Middle of the World fill with colourful hot air balloons during a festival described as the only event of its kind in South America. Visitors gather for spectacular flights and views around one of Ecuador’s most famous landmarks.
In Iceland, swimming pools are far more than places to exercise. Fed by geothermal energy, public pools function as neighbourhood meeting places, wellness spaces and even informal debating rooms where generations of Icelanders gather throughout the year. We explore a tradition now recognised on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and discover why pool culture remains such an important part of everyday Icelandic life.
