The MAJOR Franna Modifications Begin | Franna Crane Project | Part 39
The plans are becoming reality and it’s time to start cutting into our Franna crane! Once we start cutting into the original mast there’s no going back. The first major modification is officially underway and we’re starting by dropping the mast and boom 300mm. Before making the first cut, Kurtis marks out the new boom pivot position and the section of mast that needs to be removed. Once everything is checked, the grinder and gas axe come out and 300mm of the original Franna crane mast gets cut away. With the mast lowered, we need new boom pivot holes in the correct position. We pre drill each side using our Holemaker Pro 50 mag drill before setting up the Sir Meccanica WS2 portable line boring machine to bore them accurately to size for the spherical bearings. The new bearing bores also need snap ring grooves, so we put a small snap ring cutting setup from Heavy Equipment Ironworks to work. It’s a bit slower than our adjustable boring head, but for smaller holes like these it’s a handy little setup that gets into a job our bigger gear can’t. There’s still plenty to work through with the new mast position. Our SolidWorks simulations have shown where the back of the boom and winch are going to create interference once everything sits lower, but one thing we now know is that the boom lift cylinders won’t need modifying. Troy has taken the final measurements and completed the drawing for the new support plate, so once that arrives we can continue rebuilding the mast around its new position. This is where the Franna project really starts getting interesting. We’re no longer just rebuilding an old crane. We’re changing it into the Franna we actually want, and there are some much bigger modifications still to come.
