Rescue helicopters searched debris-covered valleys and hillsides across Nepal as emergency crews raced to find survivors following catastrophic flash floods in the Himalayan region.

More than 1,000 people remained missing across Nepal and neighboring China, while Nepalese police said 359 people had been killed. Helicopters were deployed to search inaccessible areas and deliver emergency supplies to thousands of people cut off after roads and other infrastructure were destroyed.

The disaster was triggered after a massive wall of ice, mud and rock collapsed into a mountain river, unleashing floodwaters along a route connecting Kathmandu with Lhasa in Tibet.

Nepalese authorities have also warned of a potential new flood threat along the Bhotekoshi River, after preliminary analysis indicated the river had become blocked and a lake had formed near the site of the earlier disaster.

Search and rescue operations remain underway.
