The earthquake never happened.
On 26 August 2026, instruments detected a powerful signal in the mountains along the Nepal–Tibet border. It was first reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. USGS later reversed that result: the reviewed signal came from a landslide so large that the moving mountain registered like a quake.
Roughly 23 minutes after the seismic signal, a destructive wall of water, mud and boulders was reported in the Bhote Koshi river system. At this film’s factual lock, at least 160 people had been reported dead across Nepal and Tibet and hundreds were missing. Missing people are not counted as deaths.
This film follows the evidence in order: why a landslide can imitate an earthquake, how ice and rock may have temporarily blocked a high mountain river, what a rapid breach could do downstream, why ordinary rainfall does not explain the surge, and which crucial link is still under investigation.
USGS has confirmed the landslide classification. Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said rainfall did not cause the flood. Nepal’s Flood Forecasting Division said preliminary imagery appeared to show an icefall, a temporary debris lake and a breach about 20 kilometres upstream of Miteri Bridge. However, NDRRMA had not received official confirmation of that imagery, and ICIMOD said the causal link between the seismic signal and the flood was not yet established. The mechanism is therefore presented as the leading model, not a final verdict.
