Qatar counts down to first Basketball World Cup in the Middle East

Qatar is preparing to make history as the first Middle Eastern nation to host the Basketball World Cup, with exactly one year remaining until the 2027 tournament. The Al Janoub Stadium, originally built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has been converted into an 8,000-capacity basketball arena, one of four venues for the 32-team event featuring 92 games. NBA stars including France's Victor Wembanyama and Serbia's Nikola Jokic are already competing in qualifying matches, with hosts Qatar guaranteed a place at the tournament.
