This documentary examines the controversial life of Pyotr Krasnov, a Russian imperial general, Don Cossack leader and one of the most prominent Russian émigrés to collaborate with Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Born into a distinguished military family, Krasnov rose through the Imperial Russian Army, commanded Cossack cavalry during the First World War and emerged as a major anti-Bolshevik figure during the Russian Civil War. As Ataman of the Don Cossacks, he sought German support for his struggle against the Bolsheviks before leaving Russia permanently in 1919. The film follows Krasnov through two decades of exile, during which he became a successful writer while his political views grew increasingly radical. After moving to Berlin, he declared his support for the Third Reich. When Germany launched Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union in June 1941, Krasnov openly welcomed the invasion and used German radio broadcasts to encourage Cossacks to support Hitler's campaign. In 1943, Nazi official Alfred Rosenberg appointed him head of the Cossack Central Office, where his reputation and authority were used to encourage recruitment for German service. The documentary also explores the deployment of Cossack formations to the Balkans, their involvement in anti-Partisan warfare and crimes against civilians, and Krasnov's role in supporting their struggle on Germany's side. As the Third Reich collapsed in 1945, Krasnov and other Cossacks surrendered to British forces in Austria. Despite believing that his long exile would protect him, he was transferred to Soviet custody. The film concludes with his return to the Soviet Union, his Moscow trial in 1947 and the lasting controversy surrounding his legacy.
