When Bruce Timm declared that Batman would be the only costumed superhero in Batman: Caped Crusader, fans wondered how characters like Jim Corrigan could ever fit into the universe.
In this video essay, I break down how the show adapted The Spectre as a tragic, 1940s noir horror story instead of as a hero, and how becoming a monster ultimately saved Jim Corrigan’s soul.
In Season 1, Detective James Corrigan was established as a corrupt officer inspired by Ed Brubaker's Gotham Central. But when Season 2 hands the reins to comic veteran J.M. DeMatteis (The Spectre, Kraven's Last Hunt), Corrigan’s storyline turns into a dark, supernatural tragedy built on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
Rather than an agent of divine wrath in a green cape, this version of The Spectre is a reanimated corpse bound to Earth by his own past sins.
I analyse Corrigan's karmic revenge tour against the criminals who escaped justice, his botched execution and its psychological toll on Barbara Gordon, and why facing his own moral failures allowed him to find true redemption.
