A 26-year-old Swiss tourist, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, has been sentenced to a year in prison in Bali after violating restrictions during Nyepi, the sacred Hindu Day of Silence, and mocking it in an Instagram video. Zgraggen filmed himself on an empty beach, calling the scene "crazy" while using expletives, sparking outrage among Balinese people online. Nyepi requires residents and tourists alike to stay indoors, avoid electricity, and observe silence for 24 hours. The judge said his actions deeply offended local faith and provoked public anger. Zgraggen apologized in court, saying he hadn't understood the seriousness of the restrictions. Bali continues to strictly enforce Nyepi rules amid record tourist arrivals and rising cases of misbehaviour.
