Iran has issued a stark warning to its Gulf neighbors and other countries, saying any nation that joins the United States in imposing economic restrictions on Tehran could be treated as an enemy.
Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, warned that any further U.S. action could trigger what he described as a “seismic” Iranian retaliation. Tehran has urged neighboring countries to stay away from Washington’s planned economic offensive.
The warning comes as the United States prepares additional economic pressure and secondary sanctions targeting foreign banks, companies and governments that continue doing business with Iran.
Washington’s strategy is aimed at forcing Iran’s trading partners to choose between access to the U.S. economy and continued economic ties with Tehran.
Iranian officials, however, have rejected the campaign, describing successive rounds of U.S. sanctions as a continuation of Washington’s long-standing pressure strategy.
Behind the defiance, Iran is facing a deepening economic crisis. Years of sanctions, disruption caused by war, declining oil revenues and restricted access to international financial markets have placed significant pressure on the Iranian economy.
The reported suspension of trade by the UAE could further affect Iran’s commercial links and deepen its economic isolation.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has also defended a memorandum of understanding that he described as an effort to move the country away from a prolonged state of “neither war nor peace.”
The growing confrontation comes as uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continues to raise concerns over global oil supplies, shipping and energy markets.
