18 Appalachian Locations Where People Vanish With Out a Trace

Eighteen places in the Appalachian Mountains where people walked in and never walked out.

Some of these cases had everything going for them. Thousands of acres searched. Hundreds of volunteers. Dogs, helicopters, thermal drones, soldiers flown in from another state. Weeks of work in falling temperatures. They found nothing at all.

Others were never searched properly in the first place. Files split across county lines and never compared. Records lost in a courthouse move. A second dive priced out because the county budget wouldn't cover it. A family given a single day to search ten thousand acres before the gate closed again. One case that was never entered into any database — no file number, no name, nothing for a relative to ever look up.

The locations run from the high bogs of Dolly Sods to a river valley now sitting under twenty meters of reservoir water. Unmapped mine portals in eastern Kentucky. A gorge full of house-sized boulders with voids underneath that no rope reaches. A creek that was named for a disappearance before the county had a courthouse.

The terrain in these mountains is real, and it does hide people. Rhododendron thickets so dense that a man lying two meters away is invisible. Peat bogs that close over behind a boot. But the terrain is not the reason most of these cases went cold.
