A newly studied star is racing around Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way, at extraordinary speeds. Known as S301, its highly elongated orbit takes it deep into one of the strongest gravitational environments astronomers can observe. Scientists hope the star will reveal how the spinning black hole drags spacetime around itself through the frame dragging effect. Its orbit could also help researchers measure Sagittarius A*’s spin and test fundamental predictions about black holes and gravity. With S301 expected to make its closest approach in two thousand thirty-one, astronomers are preparing for an exceptional cosmic experiment.
