In October of 1998, a 282-foot four-masted schooner called the Fantome sailed into the western Caribbean with 31 crew members aboard and a hurricane building over the horizon. She was a 71-year-old, riveted steel ship with an incredibly gifted 32-year-old captain, Guyan March.
When Hurricane Mitch—one of the most powerful storms ever recorded—stalled and turned directly into the ship's path, the Fantome was boxed in against the Belize Barrier Reef with nowhere to run.
