We thought we knew what Amish life was like. Horses and buggies, traditional clothing, no electricity and no modern technology. But after visiting Amish Country in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, we realised just how little we actually knew.
After travelling thousands of miles across America, we headed into the Pennsylvania countryside to experience a completely different side of the country. We learned more about the Amish communities of Lancaster County, discovered why their relationship with modern technology is far more complicated than we'd assumed, and finally understood what “Pennsylvania Dutch” actually means.
Then, because this is Mr H and Friends, we had to discover some of the local food too.
At Kitchen Kettle Village we tried shoofly pie and Pennsylvania Dutch-style whoopie pies — including pumpkin, which somehow continues to win this British family over.
We only spent a short time in Amish Country, and we're certainly not pretending that makes us experts. Quite the opposite. This visit showed us how many assumptions we'd made about a culture we knew very little about — and that's exactly what we've loved about travelling across America.
Every time we think we're starting to understand this enormous country, America shows us something completely different.
Next stop: Philadelphia, where we're finally trying a proper Philly cheesesteak and discovering what else the city has waiting for us.
