Cancer Treatment Breakthrough? Personalized mRNA Vaccine Shows Promise Against Melanoma

A potentially significant development in cancer treatment has emerged after a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine used alongside the immunotherapy Keytruda met both primary and secondary goals in a Phase 3 melanoma trial, according to drugmakers Moderna and Merck. The trial involved 1,137 patients with high-risk melanoma whose tumors had been completely removed. Patients received either the personalized mRNA vaccine in combination with Keytruda or Keytruda alone.

According to the companies, the combination reduced the risk of melanoma returning and also lowered the risk of the cancer spreading to other parts of the body. The personalized treatment uses genetic information from each patient's tumor to help the immune system identify and target cancer cells. Moderna and Merck plan to present the full findings at an upcoming medical meeting and discuss regulatory submissions.
The results could represent an important step in the development of personalized cancer immunotherapies, although the full clinical data and regulatory review will be important in determining the treatment's potential role.
