Thousands more needles found on Ottawa streets this year

Ottawa Public Health data shows a significant increase in discarded needles and glass pipes being picked up across the city this year. CTV's Dylan Dyson reports that more than 21,300 needles and 19,600 glass pipes were collected between January and June 2026, compared with about 11,600 needles and 13,500 glass pipes during the same period last year. Ottawa Public Health says Sandy Hill, Lowertown West, Lowertown East, Centretown and West Centretown are among the neighbourhoods where drug paraphernalia is being found most. Public Health tells CTV News Ottawa the increase cannot be attributed to one factor and should not be viewed as a direct measure of substance use in Ottawa.
