Russia has summoned Japan’s ambassador after Tokyo strongly protested Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iturup, the largest of four disputed southern Kuril Islands. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Japan of crossing “the line of decency,” while Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the visit absolutely unacceptable and maintained that the Northern Territories are inherently Japanese. Moscow says the islands legally became Russian after World War II. The dispute has prevented both countries from signing a formal postwar peace treaty. Watch.
