India: Government Sent Blocking Orders Every Minute During Protest Months, Says Report | WION
A report has revealed a dramatic rise in government-backed content blocking orders sent to social media platforms between March and July 2026. According to data accessed by The Indian Express, nearly 1.95 lakh blocking orders were issued to Instagram, Facebook and YouTube during the five-month period; equivalent to one order every 68 seconds. Instagram accounted for more than half of the directives, with the period coinciding with major student protests over exam leaks at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The report also says Meta integrated its systems with the government's Sahyog portal to comply with takedown requests within the mandated timeline.
