Columbia House is FINALLY Shutting Down for Good (1955-2026 RIP)

Did you know Columbia House was STILL around? After more than 70 years in business, the iconic mail-order giant is officially winding down operations and closing for good on September 15, 2026.

From its peak in the '80s and '90s—when Columbia House and BMG accounted for over 15% of all CD sales in the U.S.—to its pivot into DVDs, we’re taking a nostalgic look back at the company that built our music and movie collections.

In this video, I break down the history of Columbia House, how the famous "penny deal" and negative option billing actually worked, what their website looks like today, and my own memories of joining back in 1989 as a 16-year-old working at McDonald's.
