The quest to eliminate non-lifting surfaces and construct a pure flying wing stands as one of the most ambitious engineering journeys in military aviation history. The vintage archival footage featured throughout this documentary has been meticulously upscaled and restored, appearing in authentic colorized versions to preserve the technical heritage of early flight. The story begins during the interwar era with unorthodox experiments like Dr. Cloyd Snyder’s 1932 glider and Jack Northrop’s innovative work at Lockheed and Douglas. Believing that conventional fuselages and empennages produced parasitic drag, Northrop developed the 1929 X-216H and later the Northrop Gamma, proving high-speed all-metal construction could set transcontinental records.
By 1940, Northrop brought the concept closer to reality with the N-1M flying laboratory. Powered by twin Lycoming engines buried in the airframe, the N-1M proved tailless control was achievable through elevons and split drag rudders across hundreds of test flights at Baker and Rosamond dry lakes. As World War II escalated, the United States Army Air Forces demanded a heavy strategic bomber capable of delivering 10,000 pounds of ordnance over a 10,000-mile range if Britain fell. Northrop responded with the one-third scale N-9M test program to refine high-altitude handling and train test pilots, despite facing severe flight control hazards.
This research culminated in the massive XB-35, a 172-foot wingspan giant utilizing high-strength 75S aluminum and four Pratt & Whitney R-4360 radial engines driving contra-rotating pusher propellers. Severe gearbox vibrations and propeller synchronization failures stalled the piston program, leading directly to the jet-powered YB-49 outfitted with eight Allison J35 turbojets. While the YB-49 set endurance and speed records, tragic aerodynamic instabilities led to the fatal crash of pilot Glen Edwards on June 5, 1948, prompting the renaming of Muroc to Edwards Air Force Base. Facing high fuel consumption, yaw oscillation, and fierce competition from the conventional Convair B-36 Peacemaker, the Air Force canceled the program in 1950 and ordered the surviving prototypes smelted into aluminum ingots.
