‘Backdoor blasphemy law?’ | Free speech debate over reposting ‘joke’ critical of Islam
Former police officer and foster carer Stephen Gray was convicted of posting material on Facebook deemed “grossly offensive” under Section 127(1)(a) of the Communications Act 2003. The case began after a complaint from a neighbour, while the CPS initially declined to prosecute before the decision was challenged through the Victims’ Right to Review scheme. Gray was subsequently charged and ordered to pay more than £1,000 in fines and costs.
