$14.6B JANE STREET DEBT REFI COSTS $200M/YR. AND THEY SUFFER $15B HEDGE FUND HIT-YET NO RATINGS FLAG
Jane Street just suffered the worst monthly loss in its history roughly $15 billion in July from Jane Street’s investment in nearly failed hedge fund Situational Awareness. The investment had grown to nearly $10 billion but fell to approximately $3 billion–$3.5 billion. Also Jane Street recently completed an enormous $14.6 billion debt refinancing. Financial Times calculated that Jane Street accepted roughly $200 million in one-time costs and approximately $214 million of additional annual interest expense by replacing cheaper existing debt with substantially more expensive financing.
The FT’s analysis points to privacy. Moving toward financing held by a smaller group of investors can substantially reduce the number of outsiders receiving Jane Street’s detailed financial information. And Jane Street already carries substantial leverage. Before the refinancing, S&P Global Ratings reported approximately $11 billion of long-term borrowings, and Jane Street was rated BB- the upper end of speculative-grade, or “junk,” credit.
Meanwhile, Jane Street has moved aggressively into AI itself. In April, it committed approximately $6 billion to CoreWeave’s AI cloud platform and separately invested $1 billion in CoreWeave stock.
