Special CTD tags attached to their dorsal fins measure temperature, salinity and depth as the animals swim through the Atlantic. When tagged sharks surface, the collected information can be transmitted through satellites, giving researchers valuable near real time ocean observations. Scientists are particularly interested in the warm mixed layer near the ocean surface because its stored heat can provide energy that strengthens hurricanes.
