China’s Economic Gloom Hits Overseas Travel As Tourists Cut Trips And Choose Closer Destinations

China’s economic slowdown is beginning to reshape overseas tourism as Chinese travelers become more selective about where and how often they travel. A new 2026 forecast suggests outbound travel recovery is slowing amid weaker consumer confidence, economic uncertainty, safety concerns and geopolitical tensions.

Chinese outbound trips are still expected to remain above pre-pandemic levels, but travelers are increasingly favoring destinations closer to home. Hong Kong and Macau continue to dominate the outbound market, while South Korea is emerging as a major beneficiary of the shift.

Japan and Thailand, meanwhile, are facing challenges linked to diplomatic tensions, safety concerns and reduced airline capacity. France continues to attract fewer Chinese visitors, but spending per traveler remains significantly higher.
