"I need someone to tell me how my son died." — Christine Wansley, six weeks after her son's body was recovered from Horn Island.
Nolan Xavier Wells was eighteen years old. He would have turned nineteen this month. On the Fourth of July, he rode ten miles out to Horn Island with friends to watch the fireworks. He did not come back. Two days later, his body was recovered along the shoreline.
Six weeks later, his mother still does not know how her son died. Two autopsies have been conducted — one commissioned by the Wells family, returning a finding of undetermined pending further investigation; one completed by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office at the end of July, which has not been released to the public. District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath has said the report remains sealed until it goes before a grand jury, standard practice for any death in the county outside of natural causes or non-criminal accidents. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated early on that no foul play had been identified — his office has since asked the public for original, unedited photos and video from Horn Island on July 4th, specifically anything showing alleged altercations. Roughly sixty witnesses have been interviewed, and the FBI is assisting with digital evidence review.
