China Slams Taiwan Military Drills, Tightens Presence In Taiwan Strait

China has stepped up its criticism of Taiwan's annual military exercises, describing the drills as a political stunt while Beijing increases its maritime presence around the Taiwan Strait.

Chinese defence officials and state-affiliated media have accused Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party of creating panic and militarising Taiwanese society. Beijing has also criticised Taiwan President Lai Ching-te's participation in simulated military scenarios and whole-of-society resilience exercises.

Meanwhile, Chinese maritime authorities have announced additional measures affecting traffic in the Taiwan Strait, officially citing typhoon conditions. Analysts say the moves could also be used to test foreign vessels' responses to Chinese instructions and reinforce Beijing's claimed jurisdiction.
