In 2016, one of the strangest videos ever associated with CERN appeared online.
Shot from what appeared to be a window overlooking the grounds of the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, Switzerland, the footage showed a group of black-robed figures gathered around a statue of the Hindu deity Shiva. A woman appeared to lie down in the center of the group before another figure approached her with what looked like a knife.
Then the person filming apparently panicked and ran.
Naturally, the internet handled this calmly and rationally.
The footage was actually recorded on CERN property, something that immediately separated it from the average paranormal hoax. CERN is home to the Large Hadron Collider, the largest and most powerful particle accelerator ever constructed, and by 2016 it had already become a magnet for conspiracy theories involving black holes, alternate dimensions, portals, the end of the universe and approximately everything else imaginable.

So when footage appeared to show an occult-looking ceremony taking place inside the facility itself, conspiracy communities understandably went completely feral.
There was, however, one fairly important detail.
The sacrifice wasn't real.
CERN described the event as a spoof and launched an internal investigation into how it had been staged on the laboratory's grounds. Contemporary reporting indicated that people with legitimate access to CERN were probably responsible, with a CERN spokeswoman suggesting that scientific users had allowed their sense of humor to go considerably too far.
Which raises a fantastic question:
Why would anyone at one of the world's most famous scientific institutions stage an occult human sacrifice when the facility was already drowning in conspiracy theories?
It gets even stranger because the ritual was performed near CERN's statue of Shiva Nataraja, depicting Shiva performing the cosmic dance associated in Hindu tradition with creation and destruction. To conspiracy-minded viewers who were already suspicious of CERN, the visual combination of cloaked figures, Shiva, particle physics and an apparent stabbing could hardly have been designed more effectively.
And that is what makes the CERN ritual hoax so interesting.
This isn't really a story about scientists secretly sacrificing someone beneath the Large Hadron Collider.
It's a story about how context changes the way people interpret evidence.
A blurry video filmed at a random university would probably have been dismissed as students screwing around.
Film the same thing at CERN, surround it with occult imagery and release it into an internet already convinced physicists are opening portals to Hell, and suddenly you've created one of the most persistent modern scientific conspiracy stories.
