India has withdrawn from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) choosing to prioritise the national team's high-profile friendly against five-time world champions Brazil on October 3 in Kolkata.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup is scheduled to begin on September 24, with India invited to participate alongside hosts Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. However, the tournament's schedule clashes with India's Brazil friendly during the same FIFA international window.
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey said India was unable to participate because of its commitment to the Brazil Football Federation, while technical limitations also played a role. FIFA reportedly rejected India's proposal to field two separate squads for the ASEAN Cup and Brazil friendly.
With India pulling out of the tournament, the national team currently has only the Brazil fixture confirmed for the September-October international window. The AIFF is reportedly working to arrange two more friendlies against strong opponents, with Kuwait and two-time World Cup champions Uruguay reportedly among the possible options.
However, former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia has criticised the decision, arguing that the ASEAN Cup could be more important for the long-term development of Indian football than a single high-profile friendly.
