US Anti-Drug Campaign Escalates | Hegseth Puts Cartels On Notice Across Latin America

The United States is preparing to expand its anti-drug campaign across Latin America, with US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth warning that future operations could extend to land. The Trump administration has already targeted suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, with more than 200 people reportedly killed in the campaign. The strikes have faced criticism from human rights groups and legal experts over concerns surrounding the legality of some attacks. Hegseth said the US is working with Colombia, Ecuador and other regional partners to target drug-trafficking organisations, comparing the proposed approach to the methods used against ISIS and al-Qaeda. The US-led Americas Counter Cartel Coalition now has 19 members, with Colombia joining the alliance earlier this week. Argentina, Ecuador, Peru and Honduras are among the other participating countries, while Mexico is not part of the coalition. Meanwhile, US and Mexican forces have increased cooperation along the border, while the wider security push includes Panamax 2026, a multinational military exercise involving more than 20 countries.
