That is among the most explosive claims in Gregory Loftus’ testimony before the Madlanga Commission.
But the testimony becomes even more disturbing.
Gregory Loftus alleges that during a February 2023 police operation involving his son Bevan, officers repeatedly said they were there “to kill him” rather than arrest him. He further alleges that threats were repeated while he was handcuffed.
Then comes an even more extraordinary allegation.
Loftus says he heard a discussion about getting Bevan's attorney to bring him in, booking him out for further investigation, shooting him and covering it up. He also alleges that a dog-unit officer said there was “one more firearm to plant.”
And then there is the CCTV hard drive.
According to Loftus, police allegedly removed the hard drive because it could have shown that Bevan had not left the family property on the day he was allegedly accused of shooting at police at Bluff Meat Supply. He says the drive was never returned. A police electronics report, as described in the testimony, allegedly said the footage could not subsequently be accessed.
Loftus also testified that a Brighton Beach SAPS duty officer allegedly told him that no shooting had taken place at Bluff Meat Supply on 3 February 2023, and that no forensic team, fingerprint experts or photographers had been called to such a scene.
But this isn't simply a story of allegations.
The Commissioners repeatedly push back.
They question Gregory about why he did not report the alleged threats, whether there were alternative explanations for the police conduct, the credibility of the alleged cases against Bevan, and whether his conclusions about a police “click” executing a contract were based on evidence or his own inquiries and interpretation.
Gregory also makes another explosive allegation: that Captain Dina Governor could fabricate a witness to make an arrest. When challenged, he describes this as a possibility based on what he says he had learned about the officer's reputation.
And then the Commission puts a 2021 shooting statement in front of him.
Gregory admits he cannot personally dispute the complainant's account because he was not there, although he says the events could have been fabricated. The Commissioners then question why, if the statement existed in 2021, Bevan allegedly remained unarrested for more than a year.
