US And Colombia Launch Joint Military Operations Against Drug Cartels In Latin America

The United States and Colombia are stepping up military cooperation against drug trafficking networks and criminal groups, expanding Washington’s broader anti-cartel campaign across Latin America.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the partnership at an anti-cartel conference in Panama, saying Colombia had requested Pentagon support in its fight against what it describes as narco-terrorism.

Colombia has also joined the US-led counter-cartel coalition, alongside countries including Argentina, Ecuador, El Salvador and Peru. The coalition aims to strengthen intelligence sharing and coordinate security and judicial efforts against transnational crime.

The announcement comes as Washington faces criticism over military strikes against suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. Rights groups and legal experts have questioned the legality of some operations and whether sufficient evidence has been provided regarding the vessels targeted.
