Supreme Court Seeks West Bengal SIR Appeal Data From ECI | Nearly 34 Lakh Voter Appeals Pending

The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission of India to provide data on the disposal and pendency of appeals before appellate tribunals dealing with cases arising from the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal.

According to reports, nearly 34 lakh appeals are pending before the SIR appellate tribunals against the deletion of voters' names. The court said it cannot prescribe a fixed timeline for the tribunals but will examine the rate of disposal and address logistical issues.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant took note of concerns over the slow disposal of appeals and asked the ECI to furnish details on pendency and disposals by August 25, the next date of hearing.
