UNESCO Warns Taliban’s Education Ban Could Cause Decades of Damage to Afghanistan

UNESCO has warned that the Taliban’s continued restrictions on girls’ and women’s education could cause decades of damage to Afghanistan’s social and economic future.

Since returning to power in 2021, the Taliban has barred an estimated 2.4 million girls from secondary education, while women have also been excluded from university education. UNESCO says Afghanistan remains the only country where girls and women are formally banned from secondary and higher education.

The UN agency estimates that the restrictions could push around 600,000 Afghan women out of the workforce by 2066, potentially resulting in $9.6 billion in cumulative income losses. UNESCO also warns Afghanistan could face a shortage of more than 11,000 qualified female teachers by 2030.
