On July 17, 1981, 14-year-old Stacy Arras rode into Sunrise High Sierra Camp in Yosemite's high country on a guided mule trip. Before dinner, she walked a short trail to photograph the alpine lakes within sight of a companion and a trail guide..and was never seen again.
For 45 years, one detail has anchored every retelling of this case: the lens cap searchers supposedly found near the tree line. It's in the books. It's in the podcasts. It was recently repeated to millions of listeners. There's just one problem..I went looking for that lens cap in the 1981 record, and it isn't there. Not in the newspapers that covered every detail of one of the biggest searches in Yosemite history. Not in the released case file. And the superintendent who ran the search wrote, in his own letters that same year, that not a single clue was found.
In this documentary, I rebuild the case from the contemporaneous record: the 9-day search that put roughly 100 people, dog teams, divers, and three helicopters on the mountain. The missing-person flyer with details you've never heard. The four theories, tested against the physical facts. The myths that crept into the story, the wrong dates, the phantom fog, the geographically impossible eyewitness scene. And the nearly 2,000-page federal case file that the government still withholds under a claim of an open criminal investigation, 45 years after a girl walked behind two trees and never came back.
