The HeyGears G1X is a full-colour 3D printer and UV printer that sits somewhere between resin 3D printing, FDM and professional flatbed UV printing. Using an Epson i3200 printhead, UV-curable materials and a completely different approach to producing full-colour 3D objects, it is unlike any consumer 3D printer I've used before.
In this HeyGears G1X video, I take an in-depth hands-on look at prototype hardware and software to explain what this machine is, how the technology works and how the G1X differs from the cheaper HeyGears G1. This is not the final HeyGears G1X review, as both the hardware and software are still being developed.
The HeyGears G1 and G1X can both operate as desktop UV printers for direct printing onto flat objects, while the G1X adds a separate full-colour 3D printing system. I explore how HeyGears combines UV inkjet printing, layer-by-layer 3D printing, removable print beds and water-soluble support material with ideas familiar from resin and FDM 3D printers.
I cover the enclosed and open print beds, magnetic surfaces, tacky UV printing plates, PEI build plates and automatic bed detection. The enclosed bed offers a 330 × 130mm work area, while the larger open-bed configuration expands this to 330 × 420mm.
There is also a detailed look at the Epson i3200 printhead used by the HeyGears G1X and how it differs from the Epson F1080 found in the standard G1 and many other consumer UV printers. I explain how UV inkjet printing works, why printhead clearance matters and what users need to understand when maintaining a UV printer.
The video explores HeyGears' refillable ink system, internal ink reservoirs, automatic cleaning, ink agitation, waste handling and carbon filtration, alongside white, cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan, light magenta and varnish inks.
For positioning and alignment, I test the G1X camera system, work-area photography, object positioning and zero-point calibration, as well as the limitations of conventional top-down camera alignment. HeyGears has also confirmed further camera and scanning changes are planned for production hardware.
HeyGears Blueprint software controls the UV printing and 3D printing workflows, including artwork positioning, material profiles, depth mapping, textured UV printing, white ink and varnish. This video shows the current beta workflow rather than treating unfinished software as a final release.
Then there is the part that makes the HeyGears G1X genuinely unusual: full-colour 3D printing. Switching from conventional 2D UV printing into 3D mode requires a different material system, external refill station and interchangeable ink delivery assembly. I walk through that process, including changing the ink system, purging, nozzle checking and calibrating cured layer thickness.
I also explore how the G1X creates full-colour 3D models using UV-cured material and water-soluble supports, how the workflow compares with resin and FDM printing, and what this technology could mean for miniatures, characters, prototypes, display models and personalised full-colour objects.
With two machines called the HeyGears G1 and G1X, two fundamentally different printing modes and several accessories still in development, understanding exactly how this system works is far more useful than simply looking at a few colourful prints.
