Canada seeks tariff deal with U.S. before deadline

Trade talks between Canada and the United States are heating up as Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc returns to Washington ahead of the Aug. 19 deadline for new U.S. tariffs. CTV's Stefan Keyes reports that Canada is considering possible concessions involving automobiles, U.S. booze bans and dairy quotas in exchange for relief on U.S. tariffs affecting steel, aluminum, lumber and cars. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is warning Prime Minister Mark Carney against giving ground to U.S. negotiators unless Canada gets a tariff-free deal. The new 50 per cent tariffs are set to take effect on many Canadian goods next Wednesday, while officials remain tight-lipped about who LeBlanc will meet in Washington.
